If you’re wanting something sentimental, heart-warming, and a not-strictly historically-accurate Best Picture nominee, this is one of my all time favorites.
“Blossoms in the Dust” is Hollywood’s version of the life of Edna Gladney, yes, of the Gladney Center for Adoption.
Starring Greer Garson in the as the lead, and with her best co-star Walter Pidgeon as her husband, Sam Gladney. While the movie is decidedly more melodramatic than reality, the essentials are the same: Edna Gladney was principally responsible for removing the “illegitimate” designation from birth certificates, for extending legal rights to adopted children, and improving the health and welfare of birth mothers and abandoned children across the state of Texas.
It’s an illustrious mantle, and Garson carries it like a pro. Edna Gladney, Madam Curie – Greer Garson was practically made for playing significant women in history. “Blossoms in the Dust” is a great example of her dramatic prowess.
I’m not at all surprised “Blossoms in the Dust” was nominated for Best Picture. It’s a beautiful movie full of drama and sentiment, with exceptional acting and perfect casting. “Blossoms in the Dust” will be on TCM on Saturday, February 22, at 8:45 am CST.
