Can We Talk About It Now?

The 12th Doctor.

I have some reservations. I felt all along that Twelve should be older. For one thing, The Doctor has gotten progressively younger with each regeneration, all the way back to the 60s, but to go much younger than Matt Smith would mean to recruit teenagers. Yeesh, no thanks. I like the classic series and the different flavor having an older Doctor brings to the stories. And I am beyond burned out by fangirl companions like Martha and Amy. So, in that sense, I was definitely pleased that Twelve is older.

Also, I’m totally over everybody who is upset that The Doctor isn’t female. Making a change that big would be very hard to convincingly swing, and I don’t see how it would serve the storytelling. Yes, as millions of fans have pointed out, it can be done. I’m not even saying it shouldn’t be done ever. But really, isn’t it enough of a leap to accept a different actor in the place of the same character without also having to deal with convincingly switching genders? And anyway, this strong desire to see a female Doctor sounds like the need for validation. I’m totally fine if the Doctor is never female. Doesn’t threaten my femininity one bit. So I’m even okay that Twelve is a man.

On the other hand….

Nothing against Peter Capaldi, nothing at all, but really, a guest star? They were able to swing it with Freema Agyeman (“Martha,” who they covered by saying her guest stint was her identical cousin) but I have no idea how they’ll be able to convince all of us who have watched the series repeatedly to suspend our disbelief - that some random dude in Pompeii just happens to look identical to The Doctor, in some incarnation. And then there’s the matter of Torchwood, where Capaldi had an even more prominent role.

So no matter how you slice it, choosing Capaldi specifically for the role is…odd. He’ll probably do a fine job, I don’t mean to suggest he won’t. But…I hesitate. I will need to be convinced. I’m not sure I want to be.

What are your thoughts? Are you good with Capaldi? Did you have anyone you were hoping for instead? Am I the only one a little sad that Twelve isn’t ginger?

  1. I feel pretty much the same across he board! Glad he is older and glad he is a he! All the same feelings.

As for the guest star thing... I know they made it work with Martha, Amy and the girl from Torchwood. I'm curious if they'll ignore it or explain it. But in the classic series the sixth doctor (I believe it was six) guest starred as a villain with the fifth doctor and then he became the sixth! So it's been done before. I'm just wondering how they will address it if at all.

  2. I'm glad he's not a girl, my first thought was okay, an older dude. That's definitely going to change how the Doctor acts. He just better be amazing because I am
not impressed with Clara at all.

  3. I am glad he is older too and I agree about the woman thing. It will not bother me if the Doctor is never a woman.

I know they never cast really big names for the Doctor. But I was secretly hoping they would cast Rupert Grint... so the Doctor would be ginger.

  4. I am not sure myself. He seems like he will be great for the role but I was kind of hoping for a ginger. I like that he's older. To be honest though, I LOVE David Tennant and he has my heart as the Doctor.

  5. I am also glad he is not a girl. I think that would be very hard to get used to. I am not sure what he will be like but I think he will do okay. I was hoping for a ginger though ;)

  6. I am very curious to see how this Doctor works out. I'll start the judgement after the first episode. I need to see what this guy is made of!

  7. I wonder if this has ever been addressed (if so, I guess I'm not the sort of die-hard fan who would know about it):

Can Time Lords bear a strog resemblance to other, pre-existing people when they regenerate? We sometimes hear about doppelgangers in the "real world"; maybe Time Lords aren't exempt from that phenomenon.

If someone knows the answer to this question, I'd love to hear it!
