Movie Monday: Summer Under the Stars Week 2

August 6
Van Heflin

3:10 to Yuma (7:00 pm CST) - A sheriff must run the gauntlet to get his prisoner out of town. (This was remade a few years ago with Russell Crowe but the original is every bit as good.)

August 7
Sidney Poitier

To Sir, With Love (9:15 pm CST) - A substitute teacher changes the lives of the slum children in his class. (One of the very best teacher-as-saint movies, and set in 1960s England, which means awesome music and fashion.)

August 8
Rita Hayworth

Only Angels Have Wings (11:15 pm CST) - A team of flyers risks their lives to deliver the mail in a mountainous South American country. (A great romance also starring Cary Grant and Jean Arthur)
Gilda (1100 pm CST) - A gambler discovers an old flame in South America, but she's married to his new boss. (The famous hair-flipping scene from The Shawshank Redemption, probably RH’s most famous film)

August 9
Toshiro Mifune

The Seven Samurai (8:15 am CST) - Japanese villagers hire a team of traveling samurai to defend them against a bandit attack. (Kurosawa’s famous samurai movie based on American Westerns, Japanese with English subtitles but a great watch nonetheless)

August 10
Lionel Barrymore

You Can’t Take It With You (7:00 pm CST) - A girl from a family of freethinkers falls for the son of a conservative banker. (The scene where an IRS agent tries to explain to Barrymore why he has to pay income taxes is hilarious! This is the one movie all week you don’t want to miss!)

August 11
James Mason

Journey to the Center of the Earth (4:30 pm CST) - A professor and his colleagues follow an explorer's trail down an extinct Icelandic volcano to the earth's center. (One of our favorites growing up. A fantastic, unscientific look at the inside of the earth.)
Julius Caesar (2:30 am CST) - An all-star adaptation of Shakespeare's classic about Julius Caesar's assassination and its aftermath. (My favorite screen adaptation of one of my favorite Shakespeare plays.)

August 12
Ginger Rogers

Kitty Foyle (10:00 am CST) - A girl from the wrong side of the tracks endures scandal and heartbreak when she falls for a high-society boy. (The one that won her the well-deserved Oscar for Best Actress)
Bachelor Mother (12:00 pm CST) - A fun-loving shop girl is mistaken for the mother of a foundling. (Okay, I take it back. You don’t want to miss this one, either. Fantastic comedy and sweet story about a woman finding love and a family, not in that order)
Shall We Dance (3:15 pm CST) - A ballet dancer and a showgirl fake a marriage for publicity purposes, then fall in love. (My favorite Rogers/Astaire musical with their signature sensational dancing. This movie shows why they’re the most well-known on-screen couple.)
