Skipper Dan

Today I'm linking up at Goodnight Moon for What's Your Song?. I couldn't just pick one (as usual) so I've embedded three goodies here for ya.

Weird Al just released his latest album and it is gold, as usual. If you aren't a Weird Al fan, well, it's time to become one. Alpocalypse, his new album, is a great place to start. He parodies some of the most popular songs of today as well as works up some of his own humorous originals. And let's not forget the fabulous polka medlies!

I really love all the songs on the album, but I limited my selection today to just three.

This first one is a parody of Miley Cyrus's "Party in the USA." It's slightly dark humor, but it's my kind of dark humor, and I laugh hysterically every time I listen to it. Part of the brilliance of his writing is he can write a song about assassinating foreign dignitaries and torturing enemy agents and it be funny without being perverse.

This is a Weird Al original. And being a Disney-phile, I loved it. I don't really see it as being irreverent to the Disney experience as much as it is a friendly elbow jab to a beloved cousin - we all know it's true, so let's have a good chuckle over it.

Now, this last one is definitely my favorite from the album. I've posted the song here in the past but not the video. You can google the controversy surrounding this parody, "Perform This Way," from Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." I won't go into it here, but I think it's safe to say the parody is superior to the original. And yes, the accompanying video is creepy and disturbing. But, considering the subject matter and the original song's own video, it wouldn't be a worthwhile parody if it wasn't creepy and disturbing.

So, there you have it. A customized preview of Alpocalypse. There are plenty of other great songs like "Another Tatoo" and "Stop Forwarding That Crap To Me." Be sure and check it out on iTunes or your favorite music store. It's well worth the money. (Or, if you want to preview the rest of the album before you buy, I think the rest of the songs are on youtube as well.)

Go click over to Goodnight Moon's linkup today for more great music.

  6. I love the reference to Madonna and Gaga being "original." I may love me some Gaga but the die hard fans get so mad when you tell them she isn't the first to do lots of things in the pop world.

I was nice and didn't turn on word verifications. Please reciprocate by having your reply-to email set and not posting anonymously.
