Movie Monday: Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides

Yes! A Movie Monday Double Feature! I didn't want to wait to post this one since we just saw it and it just came out. Friday night we went to the PX theater (which, btw, is super nice) and saw the latest Pirates movie.

I am a huge fan of the first movies, but not of sequels in general. So I went into this with reservations. I'm also not a huge Johnny Depp fan, but I do like Captain Jack Sparrow. And I love Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush and Penelope Cruz.

Now, as far as the general story, this is definitely darker than the earlier Pirates movies. I mean, cannibal mermaids? Really??

And pretty much every scene with Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz - and there are a lot - involve not-very-thinly-veiled innuendo. I didn't find it funny or sexy. If anything, it was distracting, awkward and not even very cleverly handled.

I'll be honest, a lot of the charm of the first three movies was missing in this one. However, if you took this movie as a stand-alone made for an older audience and not little kids, it's a really good movie. And Ian McShane...I only wish they had put him in more of the movie. He's amazing. And there are definitely some good laugh lines and lots of action and special effects.

Overall, I give it 3/5 stars. There was definitely room for improvement, but it's a good date night movie.

  1. I completely agree with all of this. I was pretty disappointed after watching this movie over the weekend. It did not hold my attention or draw me into the movie like previous ones.

  2. I am going to wait for the DVD to see this one. The 3rd movie was so disappointing that I do not want to waste the money.

  3. I guess we'll have to wait to see this one...everything takes longer to get over here. Too bad it wasn't a five-star, but like you mentioned, it's hard for sequels to keep their integrity after a while.

  4. Ooooh I loved it!!!! I always thought Orlando Bloom was
way too girly and that was distracting haha. I thought it was definitely better than the 3rd one...and the Keith Richards cameo was great!!

I was nice and didn't turn on word verifications. Please reciprocate by having your reply-to email set and not posting anonymously.
