JG's Guide to facebook

I've noticed some people need a little help when it comes to facebook. I don't necessarily mean on how to run all the features (although that's there, too) but there's just some things about facebook and facebook culture that some people are a bit behind on. So, for the good of mankind, here is

JG's Guide to facebook

1. If you don't put it on facebook, facebook can't tell anyone!

Seriously, people - facebook isn't publishing your phone number: YOU DID, by putting it in your profile. facebook isn't telling people where you go and what you do: YOU DO, by submitting information to the Places app. facebook doesn't dig through your computer or come to your house and tell people your personal information: YOU DO - by putting personal information on facebook.

If you don't want the world to know, don't put it on facebook.
And when the world (like your boss, your boyfriend or your MIL) find out,
don't blame facebook.
It's called "personal responsibility."

2. They created the "Block" button for a reason!

Do you get tired of receiving umpteen Mafia Wars invitations a day? Don't really want to be your friend's neighbor on Farmville? Sick of seeing your news feed clogged up with Bedazzled scores?

Don't get mad - get your settings changed.

Months and months ago, pretty much from the beginning of Third-Party Applications (like Mafia Wars, Farmville and the like) facebook had this handy little feature. Under the "Please help me build my city" invitation, like directly beneath it, there is a link to click on that says "Ignore all invites from this application." Something worded like that.

And guess what? Once you click it, you stop getting invites for that app - forever!

No need to post angry statuses griping at your friends for trying to level in their game. No need to send irritated private messages to your friends because they accidentally clicked your name among their list of friends - because once you hit "Ignore", it takes you off the list for them to click! Isn't it AMAZING what being a little proactive can do, rather than just being reactive???

The same thing goes with your News Feed. Hover your cursor over the Bedazzled score and there will be a tiny X on the right. Click the X. Hit "Hide all announcements (either from that friend or that app, I've done both)." And bam! No more weird app announcements clogging up your News Feed. It's a miracle, I tell ya!

3. Don't Be a Troll!

Sadly, this one does not go without saying. Your facebook is your facebook - just like your blog is your blog. Here's the thing: that also means that other people's facebooks - are their territory. And they have the right to post whatever they want on their facebook page.

You, however, do not have the right to go to their facebook page and try to start a fight or be rude and hateful. That's called being a Troll. We get enough of that here on the blogs I don't think I need to elaborate more. However, it pertains to facebook as well. If someone posts on their status that their favorite book series is Twilight, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew or the Bobbesy Twins, you don't get to go to their status and tell them they're an idiot. It's their facebook, they can say whatever they want.

As a rule, I don't respond to trolls. Not on the blogs, not on facebook. It's not worth it. For one thing, it's like fighting a fire with gasoline. It just gives them what they want and makes them keep going. So if I ever get a troll post, I don't delete it, but I will ignore it. I suggest you do the same.

What would you add?

  3. Great list!!

And the only other thing that bothers me that I can think of....is when people post passive-aggressive status updates. I mean, it's their page. But if you have something to say...just say it!

  4. *like button*

I like to say, if you wouldn't get on stage in a room full of almost everyone you've ever met and say it into a microphone, DON'T PUT IT ON FACEBOOK!!!!!!

  5. Great list!

I use the block button quite often. Especially on those people who LOVE to air their dirty laundry on FB...too much drama for me!

  6. So well said that I tagged in an honorary status and link up on facebook. HA

You covered it well. Another nifty feature that I love is the "limited profile" feature. If you added someone but don't want them to see everything on your facebook, it is perfect because you can select what you want them to see.

  8. Preach it, sistah! You get an Amen and a HOOAH. I love how people get up in the air about phone numbers, etc shared by FB. Hello... my number isn't being shared.. I didn't put it out there!
    I love the block/ignore feature. It's my favorite :)

I was nice and didn't turn on word verifications. Please reciprocate by having your reply-to email set and not posting anonymously.
