Friday Randomness

I have to start with these, because they make me smile.

This first video stars a friend of mine, Michael Broderick. He's an actor and former Marine.

And, this is Michael with his adorable son, Michelangelo. Michelangelo is autistic. Isn't he a doll??

How does that not just melt your heart? There are a whole series of videos from the "Hollywood Says Thanks" collection on youtube. Check them out.

How's this for the "Stupid Army" moment of the week?

So, apparently the powers that be (whoever they are) created a new Land Nav course out on post. And all the training classes - BCT, OCS and IBOLC - ran it this week. And every single class failed. Or rather, only had a 20% pass rate. Every class in BCT, every class in OCS, every class in IBOLC. 4 out of 5 people failed.

Now, some might say that's a logistical issue. Perhaps they need to make some adjustments to the course, to the nav points, to something.

Apparently they decided that, no, the problem is with the guys. So, because of this, SoldierMan has his regular 16 hour day today...and then has to be back on post at 0300 tomorrow morning to run it again. Yes, 3:00 AM on a Saturday. So night sleeping tonight for us. Well, for him. I'll go to bed after he leaves. And then we'll probably be sleeping the rest of the weekend.

Of course, we HAVE to go to church this Sunday because we joined last Sunday and that would probably look bad to skip right away :)

Oh that's right, we joined a church this week. We're very excited. It's a great church. We haven't tried the Sunday School classes yet, but finding the right church is the big step. I'm not worried about plugging into a class.

It's a little different than what we're used to. We came from a big church with a great pastor and a large music program. This church also has a great pastor (I haven't taken this many notes during sermons in a while). The music is different than what we're used to - a praise band, not a choir and orchestra - and the music is all new to me, but that's probably because I don't listen to Christian Radio. (A rant for another day). It's not the style. I like pretty much anything - contemporary, traditional, whatever. These are just all new songs to us. And, I think, to most of the crowd :) but it's good and sincere, and that's what counts.

Finding a church here was one of my biggest concerns about moving. I'm happy that it didn't take as long as it might have. I hope we're this lucky with every move.

Okay, broken record time.

I've gotten several new followers over the last few weeks and I am thrilled! I really appreciate all your comments. In fact, every time a comment pops up in my email, I get excited - until I see that you haven't yet set your reply-to email. :( Makes me sad.

So, if you haven't yet, or aren't sure if you have or not, click the link at the top of the page for step-by-step instructions on how to check. Trust me, you will make me and many other fellow bloggers very, very happy. :)

  2. Glad you found a church!! I know that is one of the hardest things to find when moving to a new place.

  3. yay for a church!!! You are right, it is the hardest part! That's my main concern also, since it seems like base chapels aren't exactly what we are looking for, and depending on the area and what the population is like, well it can be difficult. I've already been searching Google Maps, but that doesn't seem to help, guess I'll have to do some drive by's when we get there, which will be in a few weeks aaaahhh =)

  4. Wow, don't even get me started on that Land Nav course!!!! It's just awful, but apparently some of the cadre are out trying to do it themselves this afternoon....we'll see what comes of that. Mark heard that it was 90% of OCS that failed!! Are you kidding me?! These high percentages tell me a couple things, the course is awful, and the 10% or 20% who actually did pass got lucky. We even heard today that the points are off by a lot too. Uuuuugh I'm nervous, Saturday could be a very good day or a very bad one....good luck to you guys!!! I will pray for them all!!!

  5. OMG WHAT!?!?!? We saw some guys today that said some of the points were off by 100-120 meters!! (I may be wrong on that exact figure, but I think that was it) but UNDERWATER?! There's a guy who has already gone to Ranger school and he said this week has been harder than that!! I'm with you, can't WAIT for it to be over!!

  6. I'm so glad you were able to find a church! That's one of my most necessary things when we get to a new place...and it's not always easy. But I think it helps so much to be able to start to feel connected to a new place.

  7. I'm glad that the two of you have found a church that you like, that's always very important.

And boo on the stupid 3am land nav course. The Army really makes no sense to me at all. EVER.

  11. I have given up on the military making sense in their reasoning! IT is a lost cause! But that is a rant for another day!
