Friday Randomness

Okay, so the wives thing Wednesday. First of all, only about 15 showed up, and most of them live on post and already knew each other. Awkward. But I got to meet a few neat people, and that was cool. I hope to get to see them again.

I wound up wearing a casual skirt with an embellished tank top. To say I was overdressed would be a slight overstatement, but only slight. Wives were wearing jeans and shorts and spaghetti strap shirts. Granted, all the soldiers (even the colonels) were in ACUs, but still.

So, yesterday I had my first BB meetup here at Benning. I got to hang out for a couple of hours with the lovely Paula Kathlyn and her adorable little guy, Caleb.

Isn't she gorgeous?

I had a blast, even just hanging out at B&N. She was a joy to spend the afternoon with, and by the end I was pretty much wrapped around Caleb's finger. I can't wait to meet up again! (And yes, I know I need a haircut. I'm working on it.)

The fridge still smells. Boo.

One slightly awkward thing about the wives orientation (other than nearly everyone else either towing or growing kids) was that almost everyone there already knew where they were being assigned next year. I had no idea we could know that early, but I guess the college op OCS guys (like SoldierMan) are last on the list for assignments. In fact, several of the ladies even said they had had the time to find out where they were going and trade with other people. So now I'm really anxious to find out where we're going. Sure, I have my pie-in-the-sky dream sheet, but I'm not really getting my hopes up for anything. We do have a short list of "please God, not there" posts. So mostly I really want to know that we didn't get one of those!

This is even more random, but I have a question: What do you consider to be a "megablog"? See, everytime I sign on, SoldierMan gets more and more impressed with the number of followers I have. (I try to tell him it's really not that much on the scale of followers, but eh.) Anyway, I said something about how it's not exactly "megablog" status, and he said, "What's a megablog?" And I said that it's someone with a lot of followers (like a whole heck of a lot more than me!) and they often tend to get more generic than personal, with lots of product reviews and giveaways. I don't know, does that seem accurate to you? I don't have, like, a "goal" as far as followers or anything like that. Followers are great, but the few really good relationships I've formed on here are way better. But anyway, what do YOU consider to be a megablog? Do you want to be one? Do you care?

I'm pretty sure the character on SoldierMan's video game just said "Semper Fee," not "Semper Fi." Uh, what?! :p

We hope to spend the weekend relaxing by the pool, shopping, playing games and generally relaxing. What are y'all doing?

Sorry if the update to this post screwed up your comment. Please retry, I really want to see it!

  1. Personally (and I'm biased, of course), I hope Lewis isn't on your "Please, God, not there" places, because I'm going there, and therefore think that everyone else should as well, as I have no friends :)

  3. Welcome to the world of Everyone had kids/and is pregnant. That's been my life for a few years. Just wait until complete strangers start asking you when you guys are FINALLY going to have kids. It gets old quick.

Sounds like you're doing pretty good adjusting to the life though. I know I was really overwhelmed yet excited when I first moved to Polk with Sean.

Oh..and to answer your megablog question. The one that always comes to mind is Pioneer Woman. Now that is a megablog!

  4. Haha it's so true! I moved to Georgia (and our first base) and now all of my friends have kids or are ready to pop. It's crazy.

As for megablogs, I personally don't like product reviews on blog unless it's something the writer wrote without any prompts (i.e. the company didn't contact them). I always said I just wanted to reach 100 readers, and now I have a few more than that, so I'm happy!

  5. I do not really have a goal number to reach in followers. I am suprised to even have 20 followers! I also think it would be a huge pressure to have a ton of followers, like you said it would be harder to just be yourself.

This glorious Memorial Day weekend will be spent in the library working on an Operations Management presentation. Hope y'all have a great & relaxing weekend!!

  6. i think i consider the mega blogs to be those with 1000+ followers. i think some of them are really good at still being real and interesting.
and then there are times when i've realized i'm only following a blog so that maybe just maybe i'll win the 5th giveaway this week and then i stop following, cause that's not the point.
i love my 38 followers and the encouragement and conversation they bring:O)

  7. I think I would call Pioneer Woman a Mega-Blog too. To me a Mega-Blog is one where if there is a giveaway, over 1000 people might enter it. Seems like the highest I have seen for a Mil wife blogger is about 700? Or 800?

Really for me I blog to have fun, help others and get to know other women. Anything else I do with it is extra to me.

  8. I'm so glad you went to the wives event. Sorry I advised you to wear a skirt! But I think it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed, especially when you're meeting new people. And how fun that you got to meet another blogger (I just became her newest follower).

And about the megablog thing? Hmmm. I've never really thought about it, but now that you mention it, the blogs I see with the most followers are those who do things like deals and giveaways. When I first started blogging, I did all those Friday Follows, and I was mostly contacted by those bloggers. I don't read their blogs now, and I'm sure they don't read mine. But I'm so thankful for the people who really do read me. That means more to me than how many followers I have.

    Have a fantastic weekend!
