Bloggy Pet Peeves

I tried to drop the Grammar Nazi attitude after I graduated college. My grammar and spelling are not perfect, I am the first to admit. And the blogosphere is a casual medium not necessarily falling under the traditional rules and regulations of formal English. And I am definitely one to use fragments, run-ons and a whole host of other verboten forms of writing when blogging, should the mood and topic call for it.

That being said, there are some things that I just can't handle.

For example:

"that's just my 2 cents" ≠ "my 2 since" or "my 2 sense" (in which case, sense should be pluralized, obviously)
"bear with me" ≠ "bare with me" (unless you are talking about skinny dipping)
"grin and bear it" ≠ "grin and bare it" (again, unless we are talking nudity)
"give someone their due" ≠ "give someone their do" (unless you are talking about a hairstyle)
"walked down the aisle" ≠ "walked down the isle" (unless she is walking across a tiny piece of land in the middle of the ocean)
"I'm so excited" ≠ "I'm so exited." (as in, Elvis has exited the building. so not the same thing.)

And of course, the standard your/you're-their/there/they're-to/too/two variations.

But mostly, my #1 blogger pet peeve: People who don't have their reply-to email address set, so when they comment on my blog I can't reply to their comments. Very annoying.

What's on your list?

  1. This post totally made my morning. I can relate to this completely. While I do not even pretend to use perfect English or grammar, SMALL things like that should be noted by the writer before posting. :) My recent annoyance. Quiet vs quite. Ugh.

And I have my e-mail listed, feel free to shoot one at me if you wish. ;) Ha

  2. Your you're your
    they're there their

I've tried to keep my mouth shut though, because sometimes I go back through and see that I've (shocking, can you believe it!) have made a mistake myself.

I'm convinced that sometimes spellcheck changes it to the wrong one. :) That's the only logical conclusion I can come up with!

  4. I totally agree with the grammar thing. The no-reply is annoying...but...some people don't know how to change their settings or realize that they can. I've had so many issues with blogger comment stuff its not even funny. So, I don't really begrudge people that. I like responding to comments when I can...if not just find them at their blog!

My #1 pet peeve is the security tag you have to type in. There is no reason for it. If you don't want spam put comment moderation. Or just check your blog comments and delete spam if it comes in. Otherwise its just extra typing and when its set to pop up it slows everything way down.

  8. I really can't stand the security thing. I also don't understand why people have it if they have to approve the comment anyways. But so many people have it. So i just have to deal...lol.

  9. I think I fit in your last peeve, I'm sorry. I don't know how to fix it. Enlighten me, please!

By the way, I just realized I never sent you my address. If you re-picked, that's fine I completely understand. I got sidetracked and I just NOW remembered. I'm sorry, I suck!

I was nice and didn't turn on word verifications. Please reciprocate by having your reply-to email set and not posting anonymously.
